Asia-Pacific Tropical Homes magazine (http://www.trophomes.com )explores the unique and exotic blend of lifestyles, and cultures, dedicated to design to inspire living spaces. They published an article about Velvet Underground in the issue October- December 08, written by Samantha Coomber.

Velvet Underground sells a range of exquisite bedroom and soft furnishing products crafted from locally sourced fabrics, including fine velvets, taffetas, satins and silks. Australian artist Kate De Ruty, the designer, founded the Hanoi-based company five years ago mainly for export purposes. Only later, given the growing popularity of the designs, did she open Velvet Underground retail showroom just off Hanoi West Lake.
The sumptuous designs have a distinctly traditionnal northern Vietnamese appareance, but come with a high level of international quality, design and standards. All are meticulously hand-made by women artisans in Velvet Underground’s own fair trade workshops, a deliberate ploy to empower these local women, (some bearing hearing difficulties).
Velvet Underground’s trademark is soft bedroom wares, such as luxurious but comfy duvets, boudoir-style pillow and pillow shams, quilts, cocoon throws and cushions, in coordinating velvets, silks and taffetas. Some feature duck down filling. A signature is a strong accent on colour combinations and use of striking shades such as deep crimsons and midnight blues. Their innovative ‘Quillow’ –a thick silk and velvet quilt that morphs into a pillow – and ‘Poetic Roll’ padded velvet bed roll complete with triangular pillow and designed for easy fold-up, are stand-outs. Other elements include quality bed linen in crisp white cottons, thick floor mattress cushions,a range of pure satin lounge wear, plus home accessories such as table lamps.
Custom- made orders for individuals, including upholstery and soft furnishings ‘out of the bedroom’, are available. If you are unable to get to Hanoi, Velvet Underground products can now be purchased on-line from their website.
